Recently I purchased a book called Socks from the Toe Up, by Wendy Johnson. Since it arrived in the mail I’ve thought of pretty much nothing else but knitting socks. I knit my first pair last year for my Dad for fathers day using the Mr Pitts Socks pattern I found on Ravelry. They were from the top down and while I don't mind this method I find I’d rather knit now from the toe up. The pattern I am using for these socks is the Slip Stitch Heel Basic Socks pattern from Wendy's book- Ravelled here.
I tried to knit 2 at a time to start with and found it easy enough but I had to keep looking at what I was doing otherwise I kept getting the balls of yarn mixed up. After I had knit the toes for both I decided to move one onto another set of needles and just do one at a time. I found this more comfortable and much faster. I like to read while I knit, thats the other reason one at a time works much better for me- I prop my kindle on my lap on a pillow so I can see it and flick across with my little finger while I knit. Any pattern that requires more concentration than great lots of knit or purl stitches I don't read with, I listen to podcasts instead.
These socks are for my Mum for Mother’s day. I know I’ve a few months left to go until Mother’s day but I wanted to give them earlier so she can wear them as the weather cools down. I’ve used Stroll Tweed from Knit Picks in Indigo Heather. Its lovely and soft, a mix of merino and nylon. It can be washed normally in the washing machine, no special care required so its a perfect yarn for knitting something to be given as a gift.
Since knitting these I’ve started another pair but this time for myself using Knit Picks Chroma fingering weight. I am calling them my unicorn socks. Ive also adapted the pattern to knit a smaller pair for Eddie out of some left over Bendigo Woollen Mills 4ply I had sitting around. I found another book by Wendy called Toe Up socks for Every Body and I am wondering if there are some patterns in toddler sizes in the book. My local bookstore doesn't have a copy so I cant flick through it. If anyone has a copy and is able to tell me if there are toddler sizes I’d be most grateful.
My goal this year is to knit all of Eddie's socks for winter and a couple of pairs for Wal and myself. I’ll do another pair for my Dad for fathers day too. Its such a lovely feeling to know I can make things for my family that they need, that will keep them warm and that they'll appreciate and love.
Does anyone else read while they knit? If you don't read do you watch TV or listen to Podcasts? I’d love some good podcast suggestions if you have some.
I hope you're enjoying the cooler weather, I know I am!
